Running Head: WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1 2In the article Physician groups bristle at proposed “sleep regulations,” by Robert Lowes, the reader gets a glimpse into the controversial debate as to whether surgeons should work less hours than they typically would. In the beginning, Mr. Lowes tells the reader about a future law that would require surgeons who worked at least twenty-two hours to state the status of their physical shape to their patient. The law would then enable patients to ultimately decide whether to switch physicians or settle for a different date for their procedure. Organizations that representa specific group surgeons, such as the American College of Cardiology, expressed their concern for potential legal-aftereffects that could arise should the physician disclose such sensitive information about their health to the patient, by stating, “mandating disclosure of sleep deprivation would usurp a physician’s professional judgement as to whether he or she is fit to operate and could give litigious patients one more reason file malpractice suit,” (Lowes, 2011). Among the organizations who support a limited work schedule for physicians is Public Citizen, and their mission is for OSHA to establish a shift limit of sixteen hours for all medical practitioners, however; associations who support preserving the traditional ample work schedule for medical doctors argue that surgeons need the extensive hourly shift for the benefit of the patient and the learning growth for incoming medical apprentices.
