Hill Fall 2019 BMAL 702 Professor Clifton Thacker Week 3: Discussion Board Forum Path-Goal & Leader-Member Exchange Theories November 5, 2019 The path-goal and the leader-exchange theories of leadership are both dynamic methods of accomplishing individual or team related goals. The path-goal theory asserts that “subordinates will be motivated if they think they are capable of performing their work, if they believe that their efforts will result in a certain outcome, and if they believe that the payoffs for doing their work are worthwhile” (Northouse, 2019, p.117). While the leader-exchange theory focuses on the interactions between leaders and followers (Northouse, 2019, p. 139). This theory describes the dyadic relationships “that [are] based on expanded and negotiated role responsibilities (extra-roles) which were called the in-group, and those that were based on the formal employment contract (defined roles), which were called the out-group” (Northouse, 2019, p. 140). Subordinates are placed in the “in or out” groups depending on their relationship with their leaders.
