Grace Tincher 8 October 2019 Fences Analysis In August Wilson’s portrayal of 1950s or 1960s America, it is evident that times were very difficult for black people and that may have contributed to some of the struggles that Troy faced in his life. Troy’s life was hard due to the harsh relationship he had with his father. He was beaten and then left home around age fourteen. Because of the way he had to grow up so fast, Troy the projected his struggles onto his own sons Cory and Lyons. He treated his children as more of a responsibility or chore rather than like a loving father-son relationship. The script highlights that they lived in the big city, and this may reflect to some of the economic struggles that Troy and Rose face. Rose is a concerned mother who only wants what’s best for her family, which is why she is so adamant that Troy and Cory build her a fence. She wishes to keep her boys in, and keep the problems that the outside neighborhood (or world) create out. It also apparent that the family has been affected by the racist ways of the early
