This only lasted 13 years and people could still drink liquor, they just couldn't making alcohol, selling it, and shipping it . The speakeasies made it easy to break this law though. Along with the Cruises to nowhere. In 1920, Prohibition began in the U.S., outlawing the sale and consumption of all alcohol and unknowingly beginning the widespread production and sale of illicit alcohol, such as cocktails, and moonshine. Cocktails gained popularity during this time as they offered a way to mask the flavor of poorly made alcohol. Popular cocktails included: Mary Pickford, French 75, Barbary Coast, Bee’s Knees, and the Sidecar. It was never illegal to drink during Prohibition. It just barred the
