Luna Vue English 2150-51 Professor Nancy Shih-Knodel Close Analysis of Seamus Heaney, “Digging” October 30th, 2019 Digging by Seamus Heaney is a free verse poem with some internal rhyming. The first stanza has only 2 lines and its is more like an introduction with the speaker explaining his actions with words in detail. “Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests; snug as a gun” (Heaney 1-2). The squat pen is symbolic for more than just simply a pen, the following words “snug as a gun” symbolizes that with the pen and what he will write will shoot bullets or fire bullets. The second stanza explains what the speaker is hearing, again with the details through words. Without even hearing, the speaker recognizes its his father and looks down. With having that strong rhyme towards the ends of the lines, ( sound/ground/down ) makes the stanza have a strong bond and creates a rhythm that the first stanza did not have. The third stanza does not have any rhythm but it was like the first stanza where it explains with details and the way he exaplins.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
