Long answer 3 1. Identify 3 stages of prenatal development. Indicate the typical age of the organism, important risks to the developing organism, as well as many major developmental milestones. Germinal stage (take place in the first 2 weeks): - Zygotes are single-celled organisms that result from conception - Migration along the fallopian tube and implantation in the uterus wall - Occasionally, the egg fails to make it down the tube. - Zygote first divides into two cells, then four, eight and so on. - As the cells multiply, they will also separate into two distinctive masses—outer cells become the placenta while inner cells become the embryo. - There’s a 20% chance that the egg fails to implant into the uterus. Embryonic stage (2 weeks-2 months) - All major organs and structures within the growing mammal will be formed such as the heart, nervous system as well as the arms legs, hands, and feet. - There is rapid cell duplication - The risk of miscarriage and birth defects is high. Fetal stage (2 months-birth) - Bones and muscles begin to form and function (reasons why mothers feel a baby kick them). - Organs begin to function; sex organs develop - The baby could live outside of its mother at 22-26 months by technology - Rapid expansion of brain tissue - Senses are fine-tuned – fetus is responsive to external cues. - smoking during pregnancy can lead to a lower birth weight; important to have a good diet (lower normal nutrients in woman’s blood leading to prematurity) 2. Compare and contrast the difference stages of sleep and wakefulness. Be sure to discuss differences in brain activity, motor activity, and mental activity in your answer.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
