(21 points) Data Table 1. Solubilities of Alcohols in Water. Alcohol Molecular Structure ( or Condensed Formula) Number of Drops methanol CH3OH(aq) 25 ethanol C2H5OH(aq) 25 1-propanol C3H8O(aq) 25 1-butanol C4H12O2 9 1-pentanol C5H12O 3 1-hexanol C6H14O 1 1-octanol C8H18O 1 Questions 1) In naming alcohols, why is it necessary to specify the carbon number of the alcohol group for propanol, butanol, and so on ( 1 -propanol, 1 -butanol, …) , but not for ethanol or methanol? (3 points) 1 The reasoning behind Methanol not having a prefix is due to the fact there is only one carbon atom so the use of prefix 1 is not needed. In Ethanol there are two carbons atoms. On both sides the OH group is attached to the first carbon, therefore the use of prefix 1 is not needed.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
