Pursuit of Equality - New nation - “All men are created equal”- what about slaves and women? - Increased awareness of inequalities - Abolition beings to take hold (Quakers, were anti-slavery, believed in true concept of equality regardless of race and gender, everyone was equal member of society ) - Slavery expanded into the deep South and adjacent Western lands - Distinct regional attitudes formed regarding the institution of slavery - Slaves saw little to no change, women only saw some level of political change - North saw slavery as a moral issue, and that South lacked morals - South saw it as a economic necessity Republican Motherhood - Mothers had important task of instructing children in the virtues of republican citizenry - Women began to call for more rights - Women gained a new importance in American political culture - since mothers are the ones who teach and instill values, they instill values of the republic into the child; raising future citizens, her duty to raise strong freedom-loving children - Abigail adams: if i can raise a president why can’t i vote Abigail Adams - She was probably john adams closest advisor - Phrase “remember the ladies” - If they were allowed to rebel against the British, then women should have the right to revolt as well; women also paid taxes, this can be taxation w/o representation Series of Compromies - Constitutional Convention - AOC was made to be weak to make sure that the government doesn’t get too strong as they feared the tyrannical British-style government - Great Compromise - Two houses (bicameral legislature) : - One based on population (known as the Lower House, House of Representatives); less powerful - One based on equal representation (voted on by state legislatures, changes after passage of 17th amendment, 2 per state; the Senate); more powerful - Slavery - Slaves counted as of a person for population and possession - Compromised over representation of slave states in Congress - Farmers didnt care for slaves until if came to this point of them gaining more rep

- The international slave trade woud end in 20 years-1808 - Postponed a solution to the problems of slavery, setting the stage for recurring conflicts over these issues later - Ambiguity and inconsistencty results in tenstions that eventually led to the Civil War State Constitutions - Placed power in the hands of the legislative branch - Maintained property qualifications for voting and citizenship Washington for President - Unanimously elected as President by the Electoral College in 1789 (100% of electoral votes) -
