CHE 121 Chapter 9 QuizName Richard Gebbia1.Explain the difference between an isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic solution. What changes (if any ) will occur to red blood cells if they are placed in each of these solutions? Why are iv fluids usually isotonic or hypotonic but not hypertonic? In other words, what is the dander in administering a hypertonic iv fluid?a.The major difference is the concentration of the solute and solvent:Hypertonic refers to a greater concentration. A hypertonic solution is one with a higher concentration of solutes outside the cell than inside the cell. When a cell is immersed into a hypertonic solution, the tendency is for water to flow out of the cell (shrink) in order to balance the concentration of the solutes. Likewise, the cytosol of the cell is conversely categorized as hypotonic, opposite of the outer solution.Hypotonic refers to a lesser concentration. A hypotonic solution has a lower concentration of solutes outside the cell than inside the cell. In an attempt to balance the concentrations of solutes inside and outside the cell, water will rush into the cell, and can cause it to swell/burst.
