Reagan Goodemoot Hum 101 30 August 2019 Professor Anderson Why Study the Humanities While watching the video titled “Why Study the Humanities”, a few ideas stated by the professor resonated with me. The first being when the woman was responding to why someone in the criminal justice field should study humanities. She told the interviewer that legal codes and government heavily relates to the arts because of philosophers and old law makers practicing different types of government, which has to do with old artifacts such as the bible. Furthermore, she said that those in the criminal justice field should study art because it will help them become more detail oriented and observant. She also stated that the Art Institute of Chicago has started training police cadets in introductory art programs to encourage them to make more focused examinations, which can be learned through art related subjects. This interested me because I would like to pursue a career in forensic science in the future. Hopefully learning more about the

Another piece of information in this video that resonated with me was when the woman said that the arts deals with communication between people. She stated that the arts facilitates discussion between groups of people. She also says that the humanities provides a medium for conversation. The video also described how throughout history the arts has been used to record and communicate information. This has been done through paintings, ancient texts, religion, music, and language, and more. This seems like a very applicable piece of knowledge to apply to everyday life, because everyone uses a form of communication in their day to day life, and any Goodemoot 1 form of communication can be brought back to the humanities. The video also discusses that the arts also entails knowing how to negotiate cultures and cultural norms. This also has to do with how the arts can be applied to everyday life and communication.
