Week 3 - Discussion 2: Confidentiality Briefly describe (in at least 150 words) an instance in your practice when you felt a patient's confidentiality was compromised. How was the situation handled? What does the literature say about this particular type of situation and how it should be handled? All health care professionals have a legal and ethical obligation of keeping all patient information safe and ensure that all firms of consultations remain private. Towards the end of last year, one of the nurses in my practice was conducted by a father of a 15 year old girl who was a patient at our practice that time demanding to know the truth of the condition of the girl since he had got information from other sources that she was pregnant. The farther had divorced the patient’s mother. I felt that the patient’s confidentiality was compromised since the nurse went on to give the father the all information about the condition of the patient. The head of the department from which the patient was receiving care later notice what had happened and called for a meeting in which all nurses were asked never to give any patient information without proper examination of the situation. According literature, so long as the patient is mature to understand the nature, purpose, benefits and risks of their condition, the healthcare professionals should always seek the patient consent before disclosing any information.
