2 Slavery in the United States How did the American system of slavery change by the early 1800s because of the “cotton revolution”? Technological innovations which took place to the process of cotton gave a new life to slavery which flourished the new nation as never before (Torget, 2015). Most of the southerners were unable to resist the enormous profits of slavery due to rise in cotton. Slavery was precisely revitalized by the rise of king cotton as a primary defining feature of the southern. Before the Trans-Atlantic trade was made illegal that is in 1808, a specular rise in direct importation of African slaves was experienced due to the large promise of cotton profits. Between the year 17876 and the year 1808, the highest number of slaves amounting to 250,000 arrived in the United States a number which is equal to the number of slaves imported in the entire slave period.
