What is “fairness?” “Balance?” Fairness is achieved through fair presentation, language and fair play. Balance – equal time or space – can promote fairness, or create false equivalence. Opinion is not fact-based reporting. But it is useful. And dangerous. News consumers want both information and affirmation in a digital age.

HDWK if a report is fair? Marked by impartiality and honesty. Free from self-interest, prejudice or favouritism. It is being fair to the evidence.

How do we find “fairness?” Fair language. Pro-life vs anti-abortion Pro-choice vs abortion rights advocate “Admitted” vs “said” “ruthless” vs “tough” “gay marriage” vs “marriage equality” “illegal alien” vs “undocumented immigrant” “climate science denier” vs “climate science skeptic.

Fair presentation. Avoid prejudicial photos Present visuals that are appropriate to the story. Seeing is no longer believing. Using the right quotes to tell the right story. Using a “neutral” voice in reporting.

Fair play. Look for relevant perspectives. A to Z is probably not useful. Try something less extreme… Find people, organizations to respond to negative criticisms.
