Exam 1 1. The Portuguese were the reason that the Europeans were able to embark on the Age of Discovery. The Portuguese were at the head of building ships, thus, they built ships that could out travel and travel faster than any other ships. If it wasn’t for ships such as caravels, the transatlantic slave trade would not have existed. They negotiated with the West African rulers that these rulers would provide slaves. In return, the Portuguese would trade goods. 2. We know that African culture shaped the lives of blacks in the British colonies of North America because blacks spoke English but continued to use African idioms and syntax.
