Freedom in the Chinese and Japanese Media Another important area in highlighting the similarities and differences between the Chinese and Japanese print media is the freedom of media in the two Asian countries. Pharr and Krauss (1996) point out that there is a constitutional guarantee of the freedom of the print media in Japan. Further, the Japanese constitution, which came into effect after the abolishment of the Menji Constitution during the American occupation outlaws any kind of censorship. Hence, the Japanese print media companies enjoy a no pre-censorship privilege that would have otherwise allowed public or state organizations to exercise preventive control of their media content. Nevertheless, the existence press club system in Japan suggests that the country’s print media cannot be described as completely free from pre-censorship.
