November 8, 2019 BSE 4-1 English Literary Criticism A Post-Modernist and Symbolic Approach on Merlin Bobis “Colours” The story “Colours” tells of a man on the fourth floor of a flat which overlooks the bedroom of a woman he often stares at, wearing a red turban, a yellow blouse and blue earrings. After seeing the color red, the man had a special case of blur in his eyes; but he can see the woman wearing bright- colored dresses and scarves. They finally meet at the bus stop. She greets him first, but all he says is “That’s a pretty yellow. Cheerful”. After that awkward encounter the conversation, she tries to open some days later she knocks at his door asking for help to bring the husband to the hospital. He accompanies her and she is grateful. But again, he does not talk even if he wants to hold her hand in the funeral. Then she disappears and he never sees her again. The succeeding paragraph rounds up the interacting signifiers in an orderly combination or syntagm. He admits that he has fallen in love but
