At the time of John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, the nation was divided over slavery and deep southern states were pushing toward secession. Before his execution, Brown wrote, “…quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.”1Even though the raid failed, it inflamed tensions and now slavery became a moral issue. It was considered the flashpoint that pushed the North and South into war. Brown is considered by many in the north a martyr or hero, which angered the southern states and prompted them to pushfor secession and prepare for the upcoming war. Horwitz writes, “It’s really in defeat that Brown triumphs. Brown really touches many of the hot buttons in our history and culture: violence, race, religious fundamentalism, the right of the individual to defy their governments.”2Several historians think that without Brown’s raid, Lincoln would not have been elected president nor even been a nominee.3
