3 1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Our main focus in this project is designing and developing a miniature thermoelectric energy harvesting device which will provide power to electronic appliances, wearable devices, wireless sensor networks that we use in our daily lives. The thermoelectric energy harvesting device, whose main source is heat, will consist of a peltier module, a converter for dc-dc conversion, and a microcontroller for control of the voltage and current output. The cost, size, and overall efficiency of our device were considered when making designs and alterations to the design. This device will be able to convert heat into electrical energy by making use of various temperature gradient. This device can help to increase the life expectancy of the batteries which are difficult, expensive and sometimes impossible to replace. In some applications, the energy harvesting device can even substitute the battery in existing systems. Most thermoelectric generators make use of a temperature difference to produce a potential difference. The conversion of thermal energy into electrical energy scales linearly. With the addition of the buck-boost converter and the microcontroller, we can add a degree of flexibility and control over the output voltage and current. This solution will be a breakthrough in the future as it will indirectly help in being less dependent on fossil fuel energy. It might increase the expense of the product but will be subsided in the long run as most of the electricity will be renewed. Thermoelectric devices such as the peltier module are not so efficient in storing energy as the most efficient ones available today have an efficiency of about 3-5%. The devices are useful in long-term applications where heat loss is unavoidable. The lifespan of the harvesting device is approximately 30 years which is more than double the lifespan of most of the devices it will be used on.
