“The Smile” – Ray Bradbury Part 1: Comprehension Questions. Answer the questions below using complete sentences. 1. Why do Tom and the others arrive early to the square? They were gathering for the festival. 2. There is coffee for sale. Why is no one buying it? There’s not a lot of wealthy people. 3. Why is everyone in line? They were waiting to spit on the painting. 4. Why won’t civilization return? Because they keep destroying everything they have left of it . 5. What was Tom supposed to do to the painting? Tom was supposed to spit on it. 6. What did the man on horseback say about the painting? He said it was beautiful . 7. How were Tom’s parents when he returned home? They were worried about where he was. 8. At the end of the story, what did Tom have in his hand? Tom had Mona Lisa’s smile in his hand. 9. What happens during the people’s festivals? And why?
