Experiment 7 Title: DNA Extraction Objective To extract the DNA from plant and animal samples. Introduction DNA is found in almost every cell of every organism. We have heard about it, we have seen diagrams of its structure, but have we ever actually seen DNA molecules? DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) was discovered in the late 1800s, but its role as the material of heredity was not elucidated for fifty years after that. It occupies a central and critical role in the cell as the genetic information in which all the information required to duplicate and maintain the organism. DNA is the apparently mysterious substance that holds the secrets of life, turns out to be a relatively simple chemical polymer that made up of repeating patterns of A’s, T’s, C’s, & G’s (representing the chemicals Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, & Guanine) ("DNA extraction", 2016). Today, Scientists can analyse DNA from samples of blood, hair roots and saliva, but before they can analyse DNA, scientists must be able to

Scientists must be able to isolate the DNA from the other unwanted substances of the cell gently enough so that the DNA is not broken up ("Extraction of DNA from onions", 2016). In this activity, we will extract DNA from various cells. After breaking up the membranes of the cells in detergent, the DNA is then separated from the rest of the cell contents. References 1.
