History of the Chinese and Japanese Media The first dimension in this comparative approach is the history of the print media in these two countries to describe how the two states have evolved over time. Even though Japan's history of print media is relatively short, the country prides itself on being among the most literate nations globally, with Western-format magazines and newspapers. The introduction of the Japanese to the west in 1859 marks the beginning of the country’s print media system. According to Akihiko (1994), the framework of the newspaper language was introduced by Albert William Hansard, an Englishman man who started the Nagasaki Shipping List and Advertiser. In 1867, Japan published its first Western Magazine dubbed as the Seiyo-Zasshi , which featured various articles and issues. Later on, the Japanese print media expanded to include women’s magazine that originally targeted the affluent. For instance, magazines such as Katei-no-Tomo and Fujin Gaho were published in 1903 and 1905 respectively.
