Lake 1 Garett Lake WRT101 Jen Neely 14 February 2019 Tucson as a Sanctuary City? Tucson is located roughly seventy miles north of the Mexico border. This has made Tucson the center of debate when it comes to immigration bills and referendums intended on halting the flow of immigrants migrating from their border cities into the United States. The debate however, has shown strong backing from both sides of the political spectrum. In 2010 the SB 1070 was passed and signed into Arizona law, and it quickly became the harshest immigration-related bill in the United States. It was met with much opposition and a majority of Arizona residents got many of its proponents to be struck down by the Supreme Court in 2012. In 2019, Arizona faces a similar problem with a new group trying to make Tucson “ Arizona’s first sanctuary city” (Treviso). Although some may see the strong local opposition to SB 1070 in the past as justification for making Tucson a sanctuary city, the extremely high crime rates in Tucson and the lack of official record keeping when SB 1070 was made a bill, show that making Tucson a sanctuary city will only bring more problems and ultimately should not happen. To start, Tucson has some of the highest crime rates across all aspects of the crime chart. Tucson’s violent crime rate is 8.22 out of every thousand residents while the national average is four per every thousand residents. Another staggering Tucson criminal statistic showed that Tucson has a property crime rate of 53.87 per every thousand residents while the national average is twenty-four per every thousand (neighborhoodscout.com).
