The sampling strategy is one of the most important components to the research process, it ensures whether the results of the study can be applied as evidence and helps contribute to the trustworthiness of the results (Houser, 2018). A convenience sample is one of the most popular sampling methods used when random sampling is not possible. Convenience samples are “a nonprobability method of selecting a sample that includes subjects who are available conveniently to the researcher” (Houser, 2018). There are many benefits over probability samples including cost and logistics, however, there are some downsides. Convenience samples can introduce bias because if the researcher is involved in choosing the subjects whether consciously or unconsciously their predetermined ideas may affect the outcome. We must be careful the way we interpret and use the findings of a convenience sample because they may not represent the whole population being studied and only represent the small few who were sampled out of proximity or their accessibility to the research study.
