ClaireEnglish 10H1, May 2018Unreliable Narrator Literary ClaimIn “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” both by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe uses an unreliable narrator to create suspense. The first instance can be found in “The Tell-Tale Heart” because the narrator is mad. The text states, “...nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you say that I am?” This quote shows how the narrator is a nervousreck and is insane. He also states, “You fancy me mad,” which shows that the narrator also knows that he is mad. This craziness makes him unreliable because the audience isn’t sure when he is telling the story as it actually is. Since the audience doesn't know what is going to happen next, suspense is created throughout the story. For example, in the story the speaker hates the old man with a burning passion because of the man’s crazy eye. The narrator watchesthe man for many nights, watching the eye, before he does something about it. The speaker says, “...I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy board over him….The old man was
