Notes on Protein Webinar Presentation 1 -protein needs are typically based on the RDA -lean protein improves overall health; iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, along with B vitamins included in lean proteins Presentation 2 -beneficial outcomes associated with protein ingestion in terms of reducing, slowing and reversing weight gain -increased satiety (more than CHO and fat) -increased thermogenesis -maintenance or accretion of fat free mass (high protein diet alleviates muscle loss) -increasing protein content while maintaining CHO content lowers weight by decreasing appetite and caloric intake -an increase in dietary protein from 15%-30% with constant CHO produces sustained decreased in intake w/ weight loss -higher protein may represent a feasible lifestyle adaptation to maintain weight loss -higher protein diet: weight loss, loss of body fat, sparing of muscle protein and bone, stability of blood sugar, satiety -higher muscle mass may reduce cancer and CVD risk -calciuria is due to greater uptake of calcium; diets moderate in protein (1-1.5g/kg) are associated with
