1.2 Discussion: Jesus and Salvation in Mark Description of how Mark Presents Jesus as God's Agent of Salvation In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is portrayed as the agent of God’s salvation, with numerous examples of service and sacrifice to others. A mission to serve others is repeatedly demonstrated throughout His actions and teachings, something Jesus emphasized to His followers. This quality is exemplified in Jesus' response to His disciples, "Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, 'If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all' " (Mark 9:35, NIV). To Mark, Jesus' "kingship" is most evident when the Romans put Him to death, rather than His ability to rule and lead others (Schenck, 2010, p. 185). As an ultimate act of servitude and sacrifice, Jesus gives His life for the sins of God's people,

As Mark 10:45 states, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus' mission of salvation and self-sacrifice is a confusing concept to His disciples, at times, who have very different expectations of what it means to be the messiah.
