Diet of Worms Information Sheet - In June 1520 Pope Leo X...

This preview shows page 1 out of 1 page.

In June 1520, Pope Leo X condemned 41 of Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses and in his papal bull he gave Luther the option, at time, to recant his statements. Luther responded by publicly burning the papal bull and refusing to renounce his theses; as a result he was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church on January 3, 1521. While at that point he should have been arrested and executed as a heretic by the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick III of Saxony (aka Frederick the Wise) intervened on his behalf and convinced the emperor to have Luther appear before a hearing at the Diet (the formal deliberative assembly of the HRE). On April 17, 1521, Luther appeared before the Diet in Worms and we will be recreating his hearing in our classroom… You will be divided into four groups and assigned either the role of lawyer or a specific character. It will be your job to research for your role and prepare either questions or responses for the hearing. Each of you will have your own, individual, graphic organizer to be filled out and handed in on the day of the hearing.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
