Called for the individual to question and, if necessary, overthrow all traditional beliefs The mind is autonomous and important It has the ability and the right to understand truth Descartes’ Deductive Approach Also known as “rationalism” Math is the key to understanding both the truths of nature and human existence 1- Find a self-evident principle 2- Deduce other truths from it using logical reasoning “The first rule was never to receive anything as a truth which I did not clearly know to be such ; that is, to avoid haste and prejudice… The second rule was to divide every difficulty which I should examine into as many parts as possible , or as might be required for resolving it. The third rule was to conduct my thoughts in an orderly manner, beginning with objects the most simple and the easiest to understand, in order to ascend as it were
