Lake 1 Garett Lake WRT 101 Jen Neely 6 March 2019 The Dilemma with Steroids in Sports The realm of college sports is one of much interest and one that brings many viewers to the national stage. Even though “there are some flaws in the current system,” the desire to stop the use of prohibited performance enhancing drugs needs to increase if sports programs across the country want to compete on an even playing field (Taylor 92). The problem that is observed from the junior college level is that there is no information presented to the athlete informing them about the consequences of anabolic steroid use or the repercussions that come with their use. It is almost as if junior college athletes are presented with the opportunity to compete for a chance at playing at a higher level without any real consequences for their actions, even if those prove to be immoral or illegal. Although history shows that anabolic steroid use did boost many Major League Baseball players performance in the 90s and early 00s, anabolic steroid use by college athletes puts them at risk to many dangerous health side effects, creates an ethical dilemma for them that can never truly be erased, and lastly poses costly penalties if the athlete where to ever get drug tested. Performance enhancing drugs have been a major part of athletics for many years. “Anabolic steroids are most often used by athletes in power sports to build muscle and shorten recovery time” (Haerens 25). This emphasizes to the reader the broad benefits of anabolic steroid

Lake 2 use, for it states the main changes that occur when athletes use them. Major league baseball players such as “Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez , Mark McGwire, Manny Ramirez , Rafael Palmeiro and Gary Sheffield have been linked to PEDs,” which shows just how prevalent anabolic steroid use was in the 90s when testing was unheard of and hitting home runs was all batters wanted to do (The Steroid Era). Nowadays, athletes at the junior college level have the ability to be influenced by the benefits of performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids without having to face the consequences that come with their increases in performance on the field. To begin, young adults prefer to “emulate” the actions of their role models, even if these actions have harmful side effects on one’s health (Goldberg). This means that role models like parents and professional athletes have the ability to alter the decisions that their subjects make.
