Emily Williams Dr. Hope Nordstrom A Study Of Nashville 12 July 2019 Civil Rights Amongst many diverse issues the United States had faced inward and outward, the issue of civil rights has been a long held one. Since the abolishment of slavery in 1865, many African Americans have been fighting for true equality and started to gain traction in the fight against racism in the 1950’s-1960’s. The 50’s-60’s time period soon became known as the “Civil Rights Movement” with the ultimate goal being the end of legalized racism and the start of a divided society becoming a whole. Along the way, certain cities and places became commonplace for many rallying alongside African Americans, one of which being Nasvhille, Tennessee. It was unique in that many future sit-ins to come would take place there in the battle for equality and many integral African Americans and intellectuals would use it as their base of operation. Nashville’s part in the Civil Rights Movement was uncommon in comparison to other places due to this. Other unique factors surrounding the movement and Nashville include the ability for African American lawyers to inspire hope and success within the community, and the support in the city created by fellow African Americans whether it be financially or spiritually. While civil rights was unquestionably a country-wide issue, one of the most important stages of the movement took place in Nashville, TN.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
