Unformatted text preview: Unit 1 The Nature of Science Question • You have been getting headaches every morning when you get to work. They slowly disappears as the day goes on. They re-appear when you get home in the evening and are gone again by bedtime. What could be wrong? How would you test it? Scientific Method • Science is a framework for gathering and organizing knowledge • Follow set steps • Keep repeating the procedure until you get results 1 Scien&fic Method Problem Solving • Recognize the problem and state it clearly • Propose possible solutions and/or possible explanations • Decide which solution or explanation was best • Do an experiment to help decide Mentos Fountains Lab •  Make a testable hypothesis •  What do we know about Mentos Fountains? What do we want to find out? 2 Scientific Method Steps • State the problem and make observations • Qualitative: Do not involve a number • Quantitative: Involve measurements • Formulate Hypotheses • Perform Experiments Collecting Data • When designing an experiment, you need to think about everything that can change and everything that can be measured • Variables •  Independent •  Things YOU can change or control •  Dependent •  Things that change or that are the result of the experiment Collecting Data • Experimental Design • You only want to change one thing at a &me •  If you change too much, you can’t see rela&onships • You need to keep all other independent variables constant • Controls •  Variables that do not change 3 Mentos Fountains Lab •  What are our variables? Procedures • A set of steps that are clearly stated that explain what you will be doing in an experiment. •  Needs to be easy to understand •  Can’t skip steps Mentos Fountains Lab •  What is our procedure? 4 Mentos Fountains Lab •  Let’s Run the Lab Data Tables • Use a data table to organize large amounts of data • Data tables need: •  Title •  Labels •  Units Using Logger Pro •  You can use a program like Logger Pro to get data from a video of your experiment. 5 Mentos Fountains Lab •  Data Table Graphs and Charts •  Graphs and charts are used to represent data •  Show rela&onships between data •  Use different styles for different types of data •  Line Graphs •  Bar Charts •  Pie Charts •  Histograms •  ScaWer Plots •  Venn Charts Graphs and Charts Assignment • Complete the Graphs and Charts Assignment in Canvas 6 Mentos Fountains Lab •  Create charts/graphs for our lab. Mentos Fountain Lab • Analyze Rela&onships/Draw Conclusions • Look for paWerns and general trends • Ask yourself “What is the big picture” Sharing Findings • Being able to communicate your results is essen&al for scien&sts • Methods • LeWers/email • Scien&fic Journals • Posters • Presenta&ons 7 Mentos Fountain Lab Wrap-‐Up •  In your lab groups, create a presenta&on using Google Slides that incorporates all of the parts of the scien&fic method we used. Each group will submit one presenta&on. •  Hypothesis •  Variables •  Procedure •  Data Tables •  Graphs •  Conclusions Unit Wrap-Up • Each group will define and give an example of one of the following terms •  Hypothesis •  Theory •  Law •  Experiment •  Collaboration •  Communication •  Independent and Dependent Variable •  Scientific Model 8 ...

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
