A . M e a c h a m | 1 English is a Crazy Language A lot of people believe that English is a funny language. This view is well reflected in Richard Lederer’s essay “English is a crazy language”. Lederer starts his essay by listing the facts that indicate the widespread influence of the English language. For instance, he mentions that English is the most widely spoken and broadcasted language of the world with half of the world’s book written in English (Lederer). It is also the language of international business and communication. However, he proceeds to argue that English is a crazy language and provides a myriad of examples that illustrate his point. It is no big secret that the English language is notoriously known for many inconsistencies in terms of grammar, word combinations and lexical meanings of words. Lederer is rather right when he says that the majority of people take the language for granted: “Language is like the air we breathe. It is invisible, inescapable indispensable… But when we take the time, step back, and listen to the sounds that escape from the holes in people’s faces and explore the paradoxes and vagaries of English, we find that hot dogs can be cold, darkrooms can be lit, homework can be done in school” (Lederer). Whar Lederer means here is that when we start analyzing specific utterances or start comparing the grammatical and lexical patterns, we cannot but notice that English is excessively rich in lexical and grammatical features which cannot be explained solely by means of language rules or by logical reasoning.
