Ashley Pixley 10-20-18 Ms. Klein AP English, 302 Weather In Frankenstein Weather is a wonderful thing, as well as a force to reckon with in the natural world; it causes destruction through earthquakes and hurricanes, and it creates life with sunshine and rain. Weather is a truly beautiful force that works on all areas of the spectrum. In Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the weather is used to create ideas, set scenes and moods, and predict the events of the future. Weather in Frankenstein is mainly used in the book to foreshadow the future by focusing emphasis on the calm before the ensuing chaos that is inevitable in the book. In the first part of the book, Victor is telling the reader about himself, his childhood, the creation of his creature, Victor’s healing process, and many other events. After the traumatizing creation of Victor’s creature, Victor spends a long time slowly healing with the help of his friend, Henry Clerval. During his healing process, Victor eventually finds comfort and happiness in nature and the natural world around him, and he says “I remember the first time I became capable of observing outward objects with any kind of pleasure, I perceived that the fallen leaves had disappeared and that the young buds were shooting forth from the trees that shaded my window. It was a divine spring, and the season contributed greatly to my convalescence.
