Directions: Take good notes that will move your discussion forward. Note page numbers and quotes that could help add to the discussion. What questions can you ask the group about some of the bigger ideas in the novel? Come up with your own questions to add to the ones below. 1. Do you see any kind of progression in the novel’s treatment of death? If so where/how? -Yes,at the beginning of the story Lily didn’t treat death very well because of the way her mother died. -When May died August thought Lily how to cope with the lost in an easier way. -“You know we all have a spirit,Lily, and when we die,it goes back to God,but nobody really knows how long that takes. Maybe it takes a split second, and maybe it takes a week or two. Anyway, when we sit with May,we’re saying, ‘It’s okay,May,we know this is your home, but you can go now. It’ll be all right” (Kidd 200). -The quote above shows how August is trying to help May and everyone else cope. 2. The novel suggests the importance of remembering/mourning those who are gone, but it also presents characters for whom memories of the dead become tremendous burdens. What do you make of this divide in the novel’s presentation of death? -This divide makes me assume that death can be easy to deal with for some people and for others it can be very hard. -The book shows how you cope with death can vary from your past or the situation you are in. - For example T-Ray did not deal with Deborah's death in a very well manner. Instead of trying to comfort Lily he takes Deborah’s death out on her. He sees Lily as a burden especially since Deborah left him and tried to get Lily back after that. This was a huge burden on Lily because her mother died the way she did which is why T-Ray treats her so badly. 3. Does the novel present suffering or death as the greater evil? - The novel shows how death can be peaceful but the suffering that it brings is a

horrific thing to deal with. The novel shows how the idea of the loved one lost having peace in heaven brings an ease to the pain of suffering. -“I hope you will not need any kind of wall up there” (Kidd 201) . -This quote shows how Lily feels as if May is safe in heaven and she feels a little more at ease of the situation. 4. While the topics of slavery, bigotry, and discrimination are threaded throughout Lily’s story, the book is still truly Lily’s story. Does that reality take away from the novel’s attempts to deal with these topics? -At the beginning of the story Lily is still oblivious about slavery, bigotry and discrimination. She might have has an overall idea but she did not know much. -As the story proceeds Lily gains more of an understanding of what is going on around her because of the new people around her and the situations she has experienced.
