The Elephant in the Roomby Daniela Delano – March 25th, 2019 Our Earth is losing many of its important species every day, resulting in the endangerment and extinction of these species. One of our most loved species, the elephant, “is disappearing at a rate of one every 15 minutes”, according to National Geographic (). Our world habitats three different types of elephants, two originating in Africa and the third found across Asia. Elephants are seen as keystone species, meaning they play crucial roles within their habitats, helping maintain how their ecosystem functions altogether. Many other species that live with and around elephants rely on the elephant’s existence for the assurance of their own. African elephants, due to both females and males possessing tusks, see poaching as a major threat to their existence and numbers. Asian elephants also experience poaching threats, but they are seen as minor threats due to the fact that
