McKenzie Ell Health Science 2 9/11/19 Paramedics are described as a trained first responder who provides medical treatment. Paramedics make quick decisions, evaluate situations, administer medical care, and transport patients to the hospital. Paramedics have always peaked my interest as a career choice. My goal by writing this paper is to see if this career choice is the right fit for me. While paramedics may have to face challenges, the career is something that I would consider given that because of the growth for the job and because of my skills that may complement the job. Paramedics have many responsibilities that they must complete on the job. Paramedics work with the police and the fire department during emergency situations to give attention to the sick or injured patients on scene at that time. Paramedics will examine the condition of the patient and give necessary medication and treatment to the patient. They also might need to transport patients to the hospital if the patient feels like it is necessary. Paramedics will send information about the patient to the hospital so the patient can be treated right when they arrive at the hospital. They also have to clean the area where the patient was so diseases and other viruses do not spread. There are many challenges in the world of a paramedic. These challenges may include: back injuries, blood-borne pathogens, hearing loss, and psychological stress. According to the U.S. Bureau Of Statistics, back injuries are among the most common health issues paramedics face. Paramedic are exposed to blood everyday, whether it's a trauma victim or handling needles and sharps surgical instruments. Paramedics risk getting Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency viruses, which causes AIDS. There is also a risk from blood splashing or bodily fluids, especially if they do not wear protective eye wear or face mask. For some paramedics, the emotional and mental trauma of their job may lead to PTSD. PAramedics may also feel psychological stress about making critical decisions in only a couple of minutes. The job outlook for a paramedic predicted by the U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics states that EMTs and Paramedics will grow 24% between 2014 and 2024. ER room are constantly crowded which causes the need for EMTs and paramedics. Paramedics work a variety of hours.
