1 STRUCTURES I FALL 2019 - UNIT 2 WORKBOOK MAKING SENSE OF ADDITION & SUBTRACTION Christine I Barden, Lecturer Addition and Subtraction DirectoryClass 9 – Addition of whole numbers 1.Using the processes from Unit I Number Talks 2.Making sense of the traditional process taught in the U.S. 3.Perform addition using more than one process Class 10 – Subtraction of whole numbers 1.Using the processes from Unit I Number Talks 2.Making sense of the traditional process taught in the U.S. 3.Perform subtraction using more than one process Class 10 At-Home Work Class 11 - Add and Subtract Fractions 1.use a number line to add and subtract fractions, 2.explain the relationship between adding and subtracting whole numbers and adding and subtracting fractions, and 3.determine the LCM and GCD of two numbers and use them to solve problems. Class 11 At-Home Work Class 12 - Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers 1.Make sense that adding and subtracting mixed numbers is like adding and subtracting whole numbers in expanded form, 2.use at least two different methods to add and subtract mixed numbers, and 3.work on adding and subtracting mixed numbers mentally. Class 12 At-Home Work Class 13 - Addition and Subtraction with Decimals 1.Make sense of adding and subtracting decimals, 2.connect addition and subtraction of decimals with the same operations with other forms of number, and 3.make sense of problems involving decimals and calculators. Class 13 At-Home Work and Preparation for Class 14 Class 14 - Adding and Subtracting Integers using Number Lines 1.make sense of adding and subtracting integers on a number line, 2.explain why addition or subtraction can or cannot be performed based on the units involved, and 3.make sense of when an answer can be left in terms of units or when it needs to be given as a number. Unit 2 Mathematical Behavior Standards Problems Addition and subtraction are related operations. As a class during the first unit, we identified different methods for adding and subtracting through the Number Talks. Many of the methods we identified that work for us mentally can be used for paper-and-pencil processes as well. Another point of emphasis is the big idea of addition and subtraction that permits us to view the operations as consistent with a variety of number forms; whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, etc. It should make sense of addition and subtraction you experienced in algebra classes as well.

Students Make sense of the problems that lead to using addition processes, know there are various processes for performing addition, use those processes, and explain why they work, and understand learners need to make sense of what they’re doing when adding or subtracting which often comes about through developing their own methods and explaining their methods to others.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
