POLICY, POLITICS, AND GLOBAL HEALTH TRENDS Public Policy Issue As a registered nurse, education, not just through formal learning, has always been close to the writer’s heart. She was privileged to start my nursing career with an organization that utilizes a nurse residency program, which is additional on the job education and training for new graduate nurses that enables a positive start for patient care. She is also the Unit Based Educator (UBE), tasked with the responsibility of delivering organization issued education, as well as unit specific requests by the manager or individual staff nurses themselves. Piedmont Healthcare is also open as a clinical site to surrounding colleges and universities. Based on the writer’s firsthand experience with patients and stories told by other nurses, there are a significant number of challenges and stressors in providing patient care, from burnout to the emotional feelings of defeat that can emerge when patient’s do not become better. Patient loads continue to increase, as well as the acuity of patient’s conditions. Patients who do not receive proper care because they reside in underserved and/or rural areas often present in extremely sick states. In order to help combat the pressures that nurses are under, the simple fact is that there is a need for more nurses and nurse educators. Issue Relevance As the baby boomer generation continues to grow older and retire, there will continue to be a need for properly trained nurses to replace them, as well as take care of them. Additionally, the nursing workforce is growing older. Two institutions that have recognized the need for development in the nursing workforce are The Journal of Nursing Education and The American Journal of Nursing, both of which published articles discussing the relevance of why support is needed in this national public policy issue. POLICY, POLITICS, AND GLOBAL HEALTH TRENDS State Nursing Workforce Centers describes four overarching themes crucial to the future of the nursing profession. The first is collaboration and leading in care delivery and redesign with emphasis on the rapidly changing healthcare system and the importance for nursing faculty to understand the changes being made. The curriculum for nursing students must provide content to include policy and finance operations within the healthcare environment. The second is removing barriers to practice and care. Maximizing the role of nurses to provide care coordination for chronic illness and psychosocial problems, as well as motivational communication that promotes health and wellness for self-care management. Third is achieving higher levels of educations.
