Ashley Pixley 2-20-17 Ms. Storm ElA 103 Our Backgrounds and Our Perceptions In class we read the novel Americanah , by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a realistic novel that surrounds the life of multiple characters in new places from America to Britain to Nigeria, the original and possibly final home place of one main character, Ifemelu. Ifemelu moves to America to go to school at Princeton, and gets her green card with the help of one of her boyfriends, Curt. Ifemelu later returns to Nigeria for good to live there, when she meets up with Obinze. Obinze is Ifemelu’s ex-boyfriend, and goes to London, but later returns home to Nigeria after he is forced to leave when his visa expires. Our Backgrounds and experiences can contribute greatly to our opinions/thoughts, our perceptions of things like child care, and our food choices and tastes in new places. Where we are from or how we were raised often affects the way that we think of things or make opinions. A time that we see this in Americanah is in a scene when Ifemelu first comes to America to live with her aunt, Aunty Uju, and is left to care for her young son, Dike. While caring for
