Cheshire 1 Karla Cheshire English 1020 Robinson November 9, 2019 Logical, calm, keen, calculating, perspicacious, acute, and astute are worthy traits to strive for. In the short story “Love is a Fallacy” by Max Shulman, the main character lives his life by these virtuous; he craftily persuades his roommate to allow him to date his girlfriend and approaches his relationship like he would approach a math problem, with a calculated, set result in mind; however, the main character learns that the life cannot be without emotion; the author conveys that life is not fully rational but a combination of both logic and emotion, and as demonstrated by the characters in the story, it is unhealthy to favor either of these extremes. My experience with my friends illustrates that it is unhealthy to favor either extreme. In the story, each character represents an extreme, the main character being fully rational; the main character was logical and planned, describing his intellect by stating “My brain was as powerful as a dynamo, precise as a chemist’s scales, as penetrating as a scalpel” (Shulman 1). The main character was shrewd, devising a plan to date the girl he believed would advance his law career; the main character was calculating, planning his dates with Polly down to the topics they would discuss. The author indicates the benefits of being logical; the main character was not
