Chapters 8, 17, 18, 19 1. What is a social institution? A social institution is a gathering of people who have banded together for a related, common purpose. These institutions help govern and dictate agreed upon social norms and values. Examples of these vary from different social levels. Community social institutions include towns, villages, LGBT communities, boy scouts, and girl scouts. Community social institutions are usually on the smaller side, and range within a set geographical area. Educational institutions include high school, elementary school, college, etc. The list goes on and can be make applicable to most groups in society. 2. How do the social institutions act to stabilize society? Social institutions act to stabilize society, because they help create the core foundations for a community, and they create a structure on how individuals should behave. An example would be law enforcement enforcing the laws of the community and/or nation. If all the laws were to suddenly disappear one day, then the community would turn into a literal Anarchy society. Social institutions set guidelines and ground rules for everyone to follow, like what time school is, or how long minors are allowed to work. Sometimes these rules are set as law, and other times they are seen as more norms that everyone agrees with. If a school was to suddenly stop having classes on a Monday, then that would require parents to suddenly figure out childcare for that day, and they would have to work their schedules around their child’s sudden lack of schooling on that given day.
