Charles 1 Nyah Charles Professor Blum College Composition I 31 October 2019 Are Smartphones the Root of all Evil? There is a question that a lot of people have asked, whether verbally or just in their heads: are smartphones bad for us as human beings? There is bountiful evidence pointing in both directions, some saying that smartphones are the key to easier living while others are saying that our brain cells are disintegrating every second we spend staring at our screens. But how can we know for sure that our phones are affecting us at all? How can we know that we are making the right decision and investing in our future by continuing to use our smart devices? Where is the actual proof that supports that our smartphones are either dangerous or good? In her article in The Atlantic , Jean M. Twenge states in Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? , “The more time teens spend looking at screens, the more likely they are to report symptoms of depression.” Here, Twenge is introducing the main idea that she bases her entire article on: smartphones and their link to mental health - more specifically, how smartphones are negatively affecting the mental health of teens and young adults.
