The documentary film Hoop Dreams is a classic example of a documentary. A documentary essentially takes the hours upon hours of an individual’s life and condenses it into film format. One way Hoop Dreams is condensed to film format is that only specific areas of the subject’s lives are focused on. Although the filmmaker could show every aspect of William Gates and Arthur Agee’s life, the filmmaker chooses to focus on the most interesting aspects of the subject’s lives. In this particular film these are mainly academic struggles and sports injuries. The filmmaker could have chosen to show the hours upon hours Arthur and William spent sleeping or studying, but instead the filmmaker showed the things that caused the viewers to ask questions about the subject’s lives. Also, the things shown in the film are matters that would interest the watchers of a sports documentary. Here are a few examples.
