MSM 6302 Organizational Behavior Exam 1: Chapters 1-3 Name:__Cody Calhoun______________________ Date: __12 Oct 2013_______ Answer the following short answer/essay questions (paragraphs only, no bullets). It is important to be thorough. Chapter 1 1. How are the management functions of planning, organizing, and leading different from one another? Explain. In the planning phase, management must define the organizations goals, establish strategies, and develop plans to coordinate activities. In the organizing phase, management must decide what task must be performed, what person, section, or team is going to perform the task, grouping of the tasks, chain of command for reporting procedures, and a project manager for decision making. In the leading process, managers must motivate and influence employees to accomplish the task. The leadership role also includes directing employees, selecting the most effective communication channels, and resolving employee conflicts. 2. Why is it important to complement intuition with systematic study in our attempts to understand behavior within organizations? Complementing intuition with systematic study is very important because intuition will allow you to pay attention to our “sixth sense” and to what could be rather than to what actually exists, and together they allow predictability. Relying on intuition alone can provide you with incomplete information, but combination of the two would provide you with a better look at the relationship, the cause and effects, and will allow you to draw a conclusion based on scientific evidence. Chapter 2 1. Explain the play of surface-level similarity and deep-level diversity in a workplace environment with the help of an example. Demographic traits are part of what makes up surface-level diversity .
