Moving into a world like we have today where technology is at the forefront of innovation and places like Silicon Valley that are exploding with tech companies, it is important for companies to incorporate great leadership as well as smart business practices to secure that their company is successful and delivers a product or service that the customers want. One of the companies that have come out of Silicon Valley within the past decade is Nest. Nest products are well known for their innovated way to make everyday life of running your house easy and in the palm of your hand. Their breakout product that paved the way for the rest of their line is the learning thermostat. With their new way of looking at standard items, it is no wonder that the founders of Nest Labs are two former Apple engineers, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers. Fadell came up with the idea when he was building a vacation home and quickly learned that all the thermostats on the market didn’t meet his requirements. That is when he joined with Rogers to bring a better product to the market. Together they embarked on a journey of utilizing already existing technology and expanding it through innovation into a product that filled a hole in the market. Both Fadell and Rogers have built Nest into a growing powerhouse when it comes to innovation within the home. They did not just fall onto some luck but rather made strategic moves to place themselves ahead of the competition. Part of their success comes from utilizing the four digital disciplines that are laid out in Joe Weinman’s Digital Disciplines. Information Excellence, Solution Leadership, Collective Intimacy, and Accelerated innovation. The first discipline, information excellence, is where the company first finds their advantage point. The idea behind this discipline is to take information that is already available and use it in an optimal way. This is exactly what Nest did. Everyone already has their smartphone with them all the time. Their platform app could simply be downloaded and be in the palm of their customers hands at any point of the day. The cloud had already been successfully integrated and accepted by the masses to allow more storage of information that won’t full up a small storage device like the phone.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
