Describe how Empires in Africa (Ghana, Mali and Songhai) grew as commercial and cultural centers along trade routes. 2. Describe the trans-Saharan slave trade and explain the effects on both West and Central Africa and the receiving societies. West African Kingdoms as Cultural and Commerce Centers The Kingdom of Ghana – How the trade gets started! (take notes here) The kingdom of Ghana began after A.D. 300. The Kingdom was in the perfect location for trading salt from the north which was used to preserve and flavor meat and gold from the south which had obvious value. Ghana reached its peak around A.D. 1050. Kingdom of Mali The kingdom of Mali began in 1235 AD. _____________ Mansa Musa ________ became the most famous leader of Mali and under his rule, Mali reached its peak in the early 1300s. The Kingdom of Mali took control of trade routes and established ____ Timbuktu __________ as the most important trade city in West Africa.
