Square Deal Definition: Refers to Theodore Roosevelt's domestic policies that focused on the "Three C's": Control of corporations, Consumer protection, Conservation of natural resources. Significance: Set of policies that attempted to prevent further labor abuses and improve workplace safety, protect the natural landscape, and improve the overall health and well-being of Americans. Trust-busting Definition: Any government activity designed to break up trusts or monopolies. Significance: Allowed governments to regulate economic competitive activities and can be enforced by both the public and private sectors. Northern Securities Case Definition: 1902 Roosevelt attacked the Northern Securities Company, a railroad holding company organized by financial titan J. P. Morgan and empire builder James J. Hill. Significance: Court held up Roosevelt's antitrust suit and ordered the company to be dissolved; however, the decision jolted Wall Street and angered big business but greatly enhanced Roosevelt's reputation as a trust smasher Hepburn Act Definition: United States federal law that gave the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) the power to set maximum railroad rates and extend its jurisdiction. Significance: This led to the discontinuation of free passes to loyal shippers. John Muir Definition: A Californian preservationist, president of the Sierra Club. Significance: Got the government to set aside 35 million acres for a national forest. Newlands Reclamation Act Definition: Authorized the use of federal money to develop the west. Significance: Helped to protect national resources. Robert LaFollette/Wisconsin Idea Definition: The Wisconsin Idea was created by the state's progressives to do away with monopolies, trusts, high costs of living, and predatory wealth which was developed by the governor and senator of Wisconsin, Robert La Follette. Significance: Holds that university research should be applied to solve problems and improve health, quality of life, the environment, and agriculture for all citizens of the state. New Nationalism Definition: Called for a national approach to the country's affairs, a strong president to deal with them and for efficiency in government and society. Significance: Urged the protection of children, women, and workers. Election of 1912/Bull Moose Party Definition: Republicans were badly split in the 1912 election, so Roosevelt broke away by forming his own Progressive party called the Bull Moose Party. Significance: Roosevelt's loss led to the election of Democratic nominee Woodrow Wilson. New Freedom Definition: Wilson's policy that favored the small business, entrepreneurship, and the free functioning of unregulated and unmonopolized markets. Significance: Proposed lowering tariffs to increase foreign competition and lower prices creating the Federal Reserve for economic stability and accessible credit for the middle class.
