Dasia Dyson Ms. Reynolds DC History 11/20/19 Mapping Segregation BCR Prompt: How did DC residents take the Civil Rights movement and make it local. Describe the event that you believe to be most impactful and why. DC residents made the Civil Rights movement local by transforming their rights to buy homes and eventually nearly took over DC. Before and during the Civil Right movement, black residents were being thrown out of their homes with covenants and sued by racists whenever they found a home that was near white families. The government also made loopholes around the laws to make these racial covenants legal.

Unformatted text preview: But, black homebuyers then boomed in the 1960s, before nearly taking over the entire east side of DC in the 1970s. This was able to happen because of the Hurd vs. Hodge case of 1948, when a black couple bought a home but their neighbors sued them. In court, it was decided that courts could not support racially restrictive covenants any longer. This was the most impactful because if this didn’t happen, then it would still be very difficult for blacks to buy homes in DC as long as there are racially restrictive covenants and racist residents to use them....
