Sociology 1101 - Note 9 (Oct 29 th , 2018) Social Inequality Social inequality vs. stratification o Social inequality is the long-term existence of significant differences in access to goods and services among social groups o Social stratification refers to the system by which groups or individuals are ranked Ranked like a cake, or pyramid Stratifies on the basis of gender, age, class, ethnicity, etc. Status: achieved vs. ascribed o Status = your rank or position within a hierarchy o Ascribed status – characteristics that are assigned to us at birth and are largely unchangeable Gender, race, ethnicity, age, physical ability o Achieved status- achievements earned by performance Occupation, education, marital status o Ascribes statuses matter less in societies which have “open” stratification systems Stratification: Open vs. Closed Systems o Stratification systems can be open or closed o Closed Based on ascribed status-born into Little or no social mobility Ex: Caste systems – India
