The Influence of Different Social Structures and Their Relation to Social Issues in America Family, Education, Economics, and Politics are all tremendously powerful institutions that can oftentimes create social issues within a group. Socialization within institutions causes

Soto 2 the idea of social engineering, negatively especially. All these institutions are linked together so that each one influences the other, with family being the most powerful of all major social institutions, creating a bunch of issues. In this essay I will use a few different sources to show the relationship and influence of each of these institutions on one another, as well as the terrible impact they have on society. I am going to argue that all of these different institutions have a role in creating negative social functions, and they are all linked together, but share similar functions in the family. Before I carry on, I want to explain what social problems are. From the book, Social Problems: Continuity and Change, social problems are defined as: “ A social problem is any condition or behavior that has negative consequences for large numbers of people and that is generally recognized as a condition or behavior that needs to be addressed. This definition has both an objective component and a subjective component” (2016). Social problems are in every society, and some are bigger problems than others, and lead to numerous issues, but where these issues stem from is what I will focus on. An important thing to notice is that social problems are not recognized by every single person: “A current example is climate change : Although the overwhelming majority of climate scientists say that climate change (changes in the earth’s climate due to the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere) is real and serious, fewer than two-thirds of Americans (64 percent) in a 2011 poll said they ‘think that global warming is happening’” (Leiserowitz, et. al., 2011). As you can see, not all social problems are seen as social problems, and this is because institutions help lead people to believe that certain issues are not actual issues in society. Family plays the biggest role in creating social beliefs, and also in creating negative social impacts in the from of social problems. Families are very diverse, going from the number

Soto 3 of family members, background of family members, religious beliefs, types of households, and many more. The idea of a family has continued to change, in ways such as the family size due to divorce. Divorce itself, being a social issue and resulting in more social issues, must be linked to something. But what is it linked to? Like all social issues, it’s hard to point out exactly what issues cause this. According to an article written in 2008, divorce rates have increased by a little bit since World War II. Yet, 40-50% of marriages end in divorce (Teachman, 2008). Children
